The Young Stranger (February 1957)

Appearing as Hal Ditmar

Synopsis from the RKO pressbook:

Seventeen-year-old Hal Ditmar (James MacArthur) is the son of movie executive Tom Ditmar (James Daly) and his wife, Helen (Kim Hunter). One evening Hal and his buddy (Jeff Silver) irritate a man sitting in front of them in a Los Angeles movie theatre. Trying to leave quietly, Hal gets into an argument with the hot-tempered theatre manager, Grubbs (Whit Bissell). In self-defense he hits Grubbs, who then charges Hal with assault. Police Sergeant Shipley (James Gregory) tries to be fair, but doesn't believe Hal's story of self-defense. So Hal resentfully talks back to the police, too. Shipley releasaes Hal in Tom's custody. Furious over the episode, Tom won't listen to Hal's story and forbids him to drive his car. Helen tries to bring father and son together, but each has hurt the other. Misunderstood, too, by his school friends, Hal goes to the theatre to apologize to Grubbs, who has dropped the charges, and begs Grubbs to tell his father the true story. But Grubbs gets nasty, and Hal hits him again. At the police station Hal still wisecracks and sulks, while the theatre manager keeps making a nuisance of himself. But Shipley, now suspicious of Grubbs, finally gets him to concede that it wasn't Hal's fault and that Hal has been telling the truth all along. Shipley sends for Tom and helps him see the importance of believing Hal. Father and son leave the police station, understanding each other at last.
