In the autumn of 1995, Vanity Fair gathered together the surviving cast members from nearly every popular network television program ever broadcast in the United States and put together a 42-page spread of themed photographs and all-time best lists. Naturally, both James MacArthur and Jack Lord were included in the 'Gumshoes' list.

While some of the photographs were of the casts of particular programs, others revolved around a central theme, such as The Westerners, The Moms, The Anchors, and The Detectives.

Among those present on 9 September 1995 for the The Detectives grouping were Kate Jackson, Robert Stack, Buddy Ebsen, Karl Malden, Angela Lansbury, Dennis Franz, Mike Connors, Hal Linden, and James MacArthur.

Because the photograph was large enough to cover three pages, we have cropped it, including only Hal Linden and James MacArthur. So, with apologies to Ms. Leibovitz, we present our version of The Detectives ...
