"Don't Try to Tell Them They're Too Young"

On Mother’s Day, Jim MacArthur presented Helen Hayes with a present he’d been saving -- a daughter-in-law-to-be, complete with diamond ring on engagement finger. She wasn’t surprised -- Jim and Joyce were school sweethearts -- but she was pleased. Two weeks later when Joyce’s parents made the formal announcement from their home in Piperville, Pennsylvania, it was with blessings all around. Twenty years old, Jim is accustomed to being treated like a man instead of a boy; when he decided to take a year’s leave of absence from Harvard “because I wasn’t getting much out of it,” his mother, though she disapproved, gave in quietly and showed up to applaud Jim -- with Joyce -- in Switzerland, where he made his new Disney film, Third Man on the Mountain. The wedding was planned for 1960, but was soon moved up a little -- to the time Jim’s picture was finished -- on November 2nd. And why not?
