The
Love Boat Marriage of Convenience (5 May 1980) Appearing as Rev. Scott Burgess Broadcast 5 May 1980 on the ABC television network, this is a story of Scott Burgess (James MacArthur), a single minister travelling on the Love Boat with his widowed aunt and housekeeper, Agatha Winslowe (Helen Hayes). Brother and sister Beatrice (Mildred Natwick) and Hollister Dale (Maurice Evans) are the conspirators who arranged the cruise, ostensibly to celebrate Scott's 10-year anniversary as their minister. However, Beatrice soon confesses to Agatha that her real motivation for planning the cruise is to help Hollister propose to Agatha. Almost before the cruise has begun and despite Agatha's protests that she has no romantic feelings for Hollister, Beatrice begins to convince Agatha that as long as she remains unmarried and Scott's housekeeper, he'll never find a wife of his own. Soon everyone seems to be throwing Agatha and Hollister together, and despite her deep-seated misgivings, she finally agrees to marry him, particularly after a heart-to-heart conversation with her nephew who, believing he is only encouraging his aunt to do something she truly wants, gives his blessing to the match. However, when the big announcement is made, Vicki Steubing (Jill Whelan) unwittingly upsets Agatha when she expresses joy at the prospect of a wedding. When Scott questions his aunt about her unexpected dismay, he soon realizes that she is only marrying Hollister so that Scott will be free of his obligation to her. The two reach an understanding and agree that neither will try to do something only out of a sense of obligation to the other. The episode ends with tireless matchmaker Beatrice, undaunted by her failure to mate her brother and her friend, attempting to convince Scott that her niece would simply be perfect for him.
