Bravo: You play Danny Williams, the right hand of police boss Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-O. What about this role do you make the most jokes?

James (laughing) : That I have to live a terrible eight months per year in Hawaii! There I swim and surf every free minute -- I am an enthusiastic water rat.

Bravo: And your role?

James: For years I have played the twenty-something lover. I am happy to have now as Danny finally a more difficult role, in which I can shoot and fight.

Bravo: You already have 16 years on the screen. How did that happen?

James: That lies in my family blood. My mother, the actress Helen Hayes, was Oscar-winner of the year 1932. My father Charles MacArthur wrote plays. I was born in December 1938 <sic> in Los Angeles, played in theaters, had then my first TV role in Deal a Blow under the direction of John Frankenheimer and in 1956 had my first movie theater film The Young Stranger.

Bravo: What happened after that?

James: Film followed on film, among other things Kidnapped, The Light in the Forest, The Interns. In The Truth About Spring, I gave her first screen kiss to Hayley Mills. And since autumn 1968, I work with Jack Lord in Hawaii Five-O.

Bravo: And your private life?

James: Unfortunately, with my career I never have enough time for that. My first marriage already has ended. Now I make sure my separation from them has nothing on the fact that I love my children, Charles (11) and Mary (6).
