The story behind this heartrending WWII propaganda
poster is that one day a photographer visiting Helen Hayes in her home in
Nyack, New York, caught sight of her young son and asked if he could photograph
him as well. A slightly bewildered 5-year-old James MacArthur was told to
look at the camera and make the saddest face he could possibly manage. Obviously,
he did a very admirable job, though the copious tears are not his own; they
were added in the photographer's darkroom. |
